AI-Assisted Information Distillation
Understanding Medical Research
Medical Case Report
Information Distillation of a Medical Case Report
In this project, I demonstrate the ability to use ChatGPT to distill dense and technical medical writing into clear, accessible language suitable for general audiences. Using a real case report published in Emerging Infectious Diseases, I selected complex excerpts and, with the assistance of AI, rewrote them in plain language, while preserving the critical scientific information.
Each “Before and After” example showcases how AI tools, combined with careful human editing and curation, can transform jargon-heavy content into easy-to-understand explanations without losing accuracy.
The goal is to make complex medical information understandable to non-experts — whether for patient education, public awareness, or general communication.
To highlight this process, I’ve included three side-by-side examples that focus on:
- Case background and significance.
- Laboratory methods and diagnosis.
- Clinical implications and treatment challenges.
Downloads and the original source are provided below for further reference.
Excerpts – Before and After:
Before: (Original Excerpt from Abstract)
“A panaritium developed in a woman in Denmark after her cat scratched her. Analysis of tissue by 16S rRNA gene sequencing revealed Mycoplasma phocimorsus, known to cause seal finger. The source of the bacterium likely transmitted by the cat is unknown, but awareness of potential zoonotic transmission from cats should be raised.”
After: (Refined Plain Language Version)
“A woman in Denmark developed a serious finger infection after her cat scratched her. Lab testing showed she was infected with Mycoplasma phocimorsus, a rare type of bacteria usually found in seals that causes a disease called seal finger. Doctors are unsure how the cat carried this germ, but this case highlights that cats might sometimes spread unusual infections to humans.”
Original issue: Formal language (“panaritium,” “zoonotic transmission”), long sentences, and indirect phrasing.
Simplified by: Using common terms (“painful finger infection” instead of “panaritium”), breaking up sentences, and explaining what seal finger is.
Before: (Excerpt from Case Description and Diagnosis)
“After M. phocimorsus was identified at SSI, whole-genome metagenomics sequencing was unsuccessfully attempted from the original specimen. However, using PCR primers covering the complete 16S rRNA sequence, a near-complete sequence was obtained. At the time of diagnosis, tissue from the lesion was examined for Mollicutes DNA by conventional PCR using primers targeting the 16S rRNA gene (1) (Appendix). Analysis of the V1–V9 sequence (1,415 bp) showed the sequence from this study had the best homology (100% coverage, 99.72% identification) with M. phocimorsus (GenBank accession no. OQ945447), a species identified in 2023 in patients from Scandinavia who had seal finger after contact with seals (1) (Figure; Appendix).”
After: (Plain Language Version)
“Lab tests confirmed that the bacteria causing the woman’s infection matched Mycoplasma phocimorsus, the same germ that causes seal finger in people who handle seals. Scientists tried to study all of the bacteria’s genes but couldn’t get a full read, so they used another method (PCR) to analyze its genetic code and were able to confirm what it was.”
Original issue: Heavy use of scientific jargon (e.g., “whole-genome metagenomics sequencing,” “PCR primers,” “16S rRNA”), making it inaccessible.
Simplified by: Summarizing complex lab methods in a relatable way, focusing on the key point (how they confirmed the bacteria), and using everyday language for gene testing.
Before: (Excerpt from Conclusion)
“Empirically, infections are often treated with β-lactam antibiotic drugs, but they are ineffective against Mycoplasma spp. because these bacteria lack a cell wall (1). Moreover, conventional bacteriologic cultures usually yield negative results for Mycoplasma spp., which generally do not grow on media used for standard bacteriologic cultures because they require specialized media for growth (1). Consequently, healthcare providers should recognize the significance of integrating diagnostic techniques such as 16S rRNA gene analysis for bacterial identification.”
After: (Plain Language Version)
“Doctors often use common antibiotics to treat infections, but these don’t work on Mycoplasma bacteria because they don’t have a cell wall. Regular lab tests also often miss Mycoplasma because it needs special conditions to grow. That’s why doctors need to use genetic tests to find this kind of bacteria.”
Original issue: Full of technical antibiotic terms and complex diagnostics explanation.
Simplified by: Explaining why common treatments fail, what makes Mycoplasma tricky to find, and why gene testing is important — all in plain language.
